Why Family 2.0?
As well as being a Co-founder of Minti, I also couldn’t help but see how many other sites were out there and weren’t being profiled.. I am passionate about getting the word out to parents and interested in what Michael Arrington, Techcrunch is doing for the Web 2.0 space.
It’s about time someone profile cool technology sites built for families that make their lives easier (we hope)…I am thinking having “Talking Tech on Family 2.0″ may be a helpful idea.
I will try to focus on the idea behind the sites profiled, the cool features that will get parents buzzing and discuss the ‘need’ it fulfills for the target market. I believe, Family 2.0 was a term coined by “Web Things Considered” and is a branch off from the ever popular Web 2.0 genre.
I think some people think that family stuff isn’t that cool or boring, this site may not change that view amongst others….but for those parents out there I hope to give you an insight into great places to join and be a part of a really fun playground that is Family 2.0.
See: TechCrunch, TechUncut, Web Things Considered who are talking about sites that offer the latest social technology that is creating such a buzz.

Hi Rachel — we’re hoping you can check us out. We launched about a month ago and have had fantastic response as a clear leader in Family Social Software. We’re focused on FamilyTrees+PhotoSharing+Calendars and we’ve created a game for toddlers which parents are calling mesmerizing, where they can engage with the family photos.
Any feedback or help getting the word out would be greatly appreciated, we think our users are right in saying we’re way ahead and have a better approach then the cingo’s and jotspots’s.
Thanks for your time!
Paul

I was very pleased to see the recent posts and articles about Family 2.0. I’ve developed a family and friend networking web application called Roundbook.com (http://www.roundbook.com).
I’ve labeled it as Family and Friends 2.0, since it allows private (safe) networking with both family and friends and takes advantage of blogs, pictures, interests, calendars, etc. It is in Beta form right now and available to the public. As with others – more features are planned.
Its exciting to see these getting some publicity. I’ll definitely be watching here.

Hi Spencer, great I’ll take a look. Any cool feature in the works that you can let out of the bag, let me know.
I think the family 2.0 market is big, so it makes sense to let everyone know what is going on in this space.
Cheers,
Rachel

Rachel, we have a lot of cool features coming up. It’ll be great to see them in action as describing them doesn’t seem to do it. I’ll let you know when each rolls out. I have made an attempt at describing them on my blog at
http://roundbookblog.blogspot.com/2006/06/in-works-at-roundbookcom.html
The upcoming features involve user administration (e.g. parental control and designated helper), ease of use, safety, and sharing.

Has’nt anyone figured out that the founder of Minti is behind this blog – why are competitors doing competitive analysis for Minti !
on June 24, 2006 on 5:31 am
I do disclose that I am one of the Co-founders of Minti…can you explain more on "why are competitors doing the competitor analysis for Minti" a little confused here… I would love to know which sites you may think to be direct competitors of Minti? I think Family 2.0 sites need to be profiled and no one was doing it.
I also enjoy chatting to other Co-founders (peers) in the space of sites that I profile.
Fostering continual innovation I think is a good idea.
But thanks for your feedback.

Hi Rachel,
I hope things are going well for you and Clay. I am leaving a message to let you know that your friends here in the State are working towards a similar goal. My wife and I created http://www.efamily.com to help give exposure to content that your users are creating.
Please feel free to contact me via my Linkedin Profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/dhosei
We created a +eFamily submission process (http://www.efamily.com/efamit/shareyourcontent.aspx), which would most definitely benefit both of our sites. Let’s unite, and help bring truth and goodness to the world!

Hi Rachel,
Thought I should let you know that one of the links you mention
http://famiy2point0.wordpress.com
links to an empty wordpress blog, and that the correct URL (I assume) is
http://family2point0.wordpress.com
just in case anyone else (like myself) is interested in reading your work.

Hi Rachel, great cause you are championing here!
I think Touchstone might fit into the category. We think of it as news reader for busy people (E,g, Non-tech Savvy mums Moms and Dads don’t have time to read RSS feeds).
They can specify key concepts like known health issues, their children’s school, their children’s myspace/flickr accounts (for monitoring what the kids are up to) the name of their golf club etc and get updates and alerts on the desktop while they work.
Alerts are also filtered for personal relevancy.
Feel free to drop me a line or check out http://www.touchstonelive.com

Hi
Not sure if our Dad Squad (http://dadsquad.com) fits into the Family 2.0 category, but I think it’s getting there.
Dad Squad is a discussion board / social networking / information portal (based in Australia) specifically for Dads. Once we have built up a good number of members we hope to start meeting up in ‘real life’ and maybe even have a beer or a ginger ale or two as a group! We are also building up a wide range of Dad-specific resources such as links, articles, news, reviews and blogs.
Unfortunately it is taking a long time to get things really rocking… but we’re working on it!

Hi Rachel,
I would like to introduce http://www.doodledays.com – free resource on childcare matters for families. We just launched.
Doodledays was born out of our own experience as parents of twin toddlers. We created it to help parents find and select daycares, read and post daycare reviews, upload children’s drawings and doodles, ask and answer questions, browse news, articles, blog-posts and alerts, post ads, childcare activities planner, etc.
Hope this fits your Family 2.0 category.
Here is the url: http://www.doodledays.com
Thanks!
